ABOUT DUBAL

認識杜拜

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and one of the most significant religious periods for Muslims worldwide. It represents spiritual purification, reflection, and charity. In Dubai, as part of the UAE, Ramadan significantly influences daily life, business operations, and dining habits.

  1. Meaning and Practices of Fasting
    • Influence of Islam:
      • Who Fasts: All healthy Muslim adults above the age of 12 are required to fast.
      • Fasting Rules: From sunrise to sunset, Muslims refrain from:
Eating/Drinking (including water)/Smoking/Negative behaviors or speech
      • Spiritual Purpose: Emphasizes self-discipline, compassion, and care for the less fortunate.
  2. Daily Schedule During Ramadan
    • Suhoor: Pre-dawn meal to sustain energy for the day.
    • Iftar: Meal to break the fast at sunset, typically starting with dates and water, followed by traditional dishes.
    • Life resumes its normal pace after sunset, and special nightly prayers (Taraweeh) are held at mosques.
  3. Dining and Social Customs
    • Iftar is traditionally enjoyed with family, friends, or the community. Many hotels host lavish Iftar buffets.
    • Restaurants, malls, and public spaces become lively in the evenings, often staying open late into the night.
    • Work and school hours are shortened, with many businesses and government offices adopting reduced working hours (usually 6-hour workdays).
  4. City Atmosphere in Dubai
    • Daytime is quieter and more respectful, with a calm atmosphere.
    • Shopping malls and entertainment venues are less busy during the day but vibrant at night.
    • The last one or two days of Ramadan mark Eid al-Fitr, one of the biggest Muslim celebrations, creating a festive atmosphere across the city.
  5. Etiquette for Non-Muslims and Tourists
    • In recent years, Dubai has become more accommodating. Non-Muslims may dine at select restaurants during the day (especially in malls), but it is still respectful to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public.
    • Hotel restaurants and international cafés like Starbucks and Costa remain open during the day, often with screens or designated areas.
    • Modest dress and respectful behavior in public places are expected.
  6. Expected Dates for Ramadan in 2025 (Final dates may vary based on moon sighting)
    • Start Date: Around February 28, 2025/End Date: Around March 30, 2025
